Pre and Post Treatment Care

Photofacial

A Photofacial is a gradual process. Most individuals require 5 to 8 treatments to reduce the flushing, vessels and pigmentation.  The light is pulsed over the face and it feels like a mild rubber band snap.  After a procedure, the skin is often pink in its appearance, and there can be some mild temporary darkening of the treated pigmentation regions. Before and after a treatment, we would ask you to strictly avoid tanning for 4 weeks.

There are a few risks with any light based treatment.  The majority of individuals have no problems with the treatments.   There are risks related to the performance of these procedures and, although rare, may include the following:

  1. Allergic reactions – Although uncommon, I could possibly develop an allergic reaction to medicines applied to the treated area and that I could possibly develop an allergic reaction to any medications that may be prescribed for me.
  2. Hemorrhage and bruising – Bruising in the treated area is possible, especially if, within the last ten (10) days, I (we) have taken aspirin or aspirin-containing products, or other medications that “thin” the blood.
  3. Recurrence of the pigment – I may not experience permanent results even with multiple treatments
  4. Pigment changes (skin color) – During the healing process, the treated area may become either lighter or darker in color than the surrounding skin.  This is usually temporary, but on a rare occasion, it may be permanent.
  5. Sun exposure – Once the surface has healed, it may be pink and sensitive to the sun.  Treated areas should be blocked completely, that a sun block with and SPF greater than 40 should be used at all times in areas not protected by clothing, whether or not I am in the sun.
  6. Darker Pigment and peeling – This can occur when pigment is treated.  The area can become darker in color and peel.  Do not pick the area and avoid sun exposure during the healing process and use an spf once area has healed.

Post-Treatment Care

  • Apply Laser Enzyme gel or Elta Silver gel as needed.
  • Avoid direct exposure to the sun on the treatment area; use UVA/UVB sun blockers.   Please remember sun exposure can cause delayed hyper or hypo pigmentation and possible blistering.  After two weeks a sun block of at least 30 SPF is recommended.
