Meet Our Medical Director, Dr. Southern

Over the last couple of months, we have been introducing you to our amazing team members at Elite. We wanted you to know them a little better, to know more about each person behind the treatment, so the trust and connection you have with your service provider grows deeper roots. For this interview, we get to learn about the hands behind the needle and advanced medical services: Dr. Southern. 

The color of the foliage is changing, leaves are beginning to fall, the wind is blowing a cooler breeze, the weather is pleasant, and the days are beautiful everywhere… except here in Texas….  Does anyone feel that with me? Lol! But you know what? Just stop by your favorite local coffee shop for a pumpkin-flavored beverage with extra foam (or iced, more than likely), buy yourself some fall-inspired decor, and let’s manifest the temperature dropping a little. We will be able to enjoy the fall weather for… oh, about a day and a half as soon as it gets here. Don’t worry, Texas, and we’re ready for it! Ladies, sweater weather is almost here!

In her own words …

Why did you decide to go into the medical field?

I’ve always had a keen interest in science, even from a young age, but I experienced a strong fascination when it came to Biology and the human body. I went into medicine so I could help people. I enjoy aesthetic medicine because improving how someone looks can have a profound effect on their whole life, powerfully impacting mental and emotional well-being. When those two things are nurtured, we, as humans, are more confident, feel more powerful and poised, and position ourselves to take more positive risks with respect to careers and relationships. My philosophy is: take the win!

What are your favorite Elite services?

My favorite services to get are: 

• ClearLift which uses a non-ablative laser to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, skin laxity, pore size, and scarring.
• HydraFacial for cleansing, extracting impurities and congestion, and hydrating.
• Microneedling with Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP) for stimulating collagen production and rejuvenating the skin

My favorite services to perform are:

• PDO Threads use dissolvable sutures to lift sagging skin.

• Neuromodulators, like Botox and Jeuveau, treat trouble areas like crow’s feet, frown lines, and creases on the forehead or between the eyebrows.

What is your skincare routine?

I cleanse morning and night with Obagi® Nu-Derm Foaming Gel. I follow that with SkinBe++er InterFuse® Treatment Cream EYE and SkinBe++er Techno Neck Perfecting Cream. And at night, I use AlphaRet® Overnight Cream.

How would you describe working at Elite Medical and Skin Laser Center?

Elite is very science-oriented, and that suits me incredibly well. Serious thought is given as to whether a treatment works, whether it is truly a new treatment or just a rehashing of an old treatment, and whether it would benefit our clients before we start offering it. Our treatments are well-researched, with a significant measure of success and positive client reviews.

Tell us the best and worst advice given to you regarding skin care.

The worst advice I was given was when I was a high school senior, and a scholarship committee interviewer advised me not to attend medical school. I was told that because I would be the only woman in my class, the men wouldn’t study with me. Thankfully, I didn’t take that advice. It pays not to listen to limiting advice. When I arrived at Baylor College of Medicine, more than one-third of my class were women!

The best advice I was given, hands-down, was to use sunscreen! I just wish I’d received it sooner. People need to realize how important it is to make this part of one’s daily routine—you don’t have to be outdoors to be impacted by ultraviolet rays. I’m talking to you, computer friends!
